Mississippi

The Mississippi Department of Insurance requires each person selling insurance in the state to hold an insurance producer license.

Getting Started:

This page contains a detailed roadmap to obtaining a license as an insurance agent. We will guide you through the entire procedure and will readily answer any queries you might have throughout this journey.

The Mississippi Department of Insurance mandates every individual who wishes to sell insurance within the state to possess an insurance producer license. It’s up to you to decide the line of authority in which you want to obtain your certification: health insurance, life insurance, property & casualty insurance, or an amalgamation of these lines.

Upon deciding the type of license required, you are all set to commence the process. There are four steps to secure your insurance license in Mississippi.

1. Prelicensing Course:

The initial step encompasses fulfilling the prerequisites for prelicensing education. As per the regulations in Mississippi, aspirant agents are obliged to undertake 20 hours of prelicensing education for every line of authority prior to sitting for the state exam.

2. Pass The State of Mississippi Licensing Exam:

Upon completing your pre-licensing course. You’ll be prepared to sit for the state licensing exam. This exam is taken at a Pearson VUE testing center. This exam can also be taken remotely.

The passing score varies based on the nature of the exam. To succeed in the Life Only, Accident & Health Only, and Life, Accident & Health exams, you must secure a score of 65% or above. For all other examination categories, a minimum score of 70% is mandatory to pass your Mississippi state licensing exam.

Bear in mind that retaking the exam incurs extra fees, making it crucial to secure a passing score on your first attempt.

3. Apply for License

Once you’ve passed the exam, you can proceed to apply for your license thru the National Insurance Producer Registry (NIPR) through an online application process. After a five-day period, visit the Mississippi Department of Insurance website, and under the Producers/Agents section, choose License Search to verify if your license has been issued. Upon license issuance, you have the option to print it directly from the homepage.

4. Continuing Education Requirement:

All Mississippi resident insurance producers seeking license renewal must fulfill Continuing Education (CE) requirements. Typically, agents and adjusters are required to complete 24 hours of CE every 2 years, which includes 3 hours dedicated to ethics training. Specific products like long-term care and annuities have additional CE requirements.

For out of state non-resident license holders must currently comply with their home state’s continuing education prerequisites.

It’s crucial to keep on top of any modifications in Mississippi insurance laws and continuing education requirements.
